Leaving Eden

Silence descends heavily in the wake of
your retreating footsteps,
desolate,
cruel in its unrelenting neutrality.
My thoughts are a startled murmuration
of starlings
with desperately flapping wings
resounding mournfully into the middle distance.
They settle delicately on my shoulders,
unable to bear the weight of our
existence.
We were the beginnings
of a dream,
a building crescendo,
the first strokes of a masterpiece
that fate or folly deemed never know
the fulfillment of completion.
A bitter wind sends its piercing cry
through the spaces of my ribcage.
Cold as a January frost.

Hello and welcome to my page~ My name is Larisa--a very common Slavic name that was either derived from the Latin word hilaris, meaning "cheerful," or from the Greek city of Larissa, meaning "strong fortress." Born in Ukraine, I emigrated with my family to America when I was still a small child and now make my home in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Growing up immersed in two vastly differing cultures led me to have a burning curiosity about people all over the world. Stemming from said curiosity, I have fallen in love with traveling to other countries, meeting new people and delving into their culture, exploring new cities, and of course, dining on the local cuisine! If I cannot escape into a different country, then my next favorite method of adventure is to lose myself in a spectacular book. I enjoy books of all genres--from fiction and novels, to biographies and ethnographies. As long as it captures my fancy and holds me spellbound the entire time, I will burn through the book like a forest fire! Because of this penchant for reading and travel, coupled with my love of deep and mysterious things, I have been often called a dreamer and I find the title suits me. With that being said, I invite you to stay a while, perhaps make yourself a cup of tea and linger through my posts and feel free to comment or share a thought :-)

  1. This was beautiful Larissa from the opening line to its finale. The way you use vivid and descriptive language is so clinical and compelling that I could picture each scene in my mind with clarity. This was a joy to read and I hope your having an amazing weekend.

    1. What gorgeous feedback!! Thank you, this made my day! I’m sure you already know this as a writer but sometimes I’ll post something and kind of hate it because I have edited it and stared at it too much. I kind of felt that way about this poem. So your comment is the perfect antidote! I’m doing pretty good this morning, how have you been?

      1. I’m doing well thank you and I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes I set myself a limit on how many times I can edit after I finished writing because I know if I keep looking I won’t publish it but I’m glad this gem was published and it was a joy to read. I hope you have an amazing week ahead!

        1. Oh wow, I should set limits on my compulsive editing too! I do the same thing with pictures – the more I stare at a pic of myself, the uglier it looks lol! We are our own harshest critiques, always. Thank you, I hope I have an amazing week too. Right back atcha πŸ˜‰

      1. You are most welcome ☺️ I am doing well! Just trying to make the most of this downtime during COVID… lots of reading, writing and beach-going. Today, we have a hurricane on the island, so that livens things up a bit ha! How are you doing?

          1. That is wonderful to hear πŸ’— The hurricane was quite anticlimactic, which is a blessing (but honestly I was hoping it would be just a tad more exciting… I love a good storm β›ˆ). Hope you have a beautiful week! ☺️

You’re a weaver of images! My goodness… I’m always transported to the images you create. There’s something very rich and sacred about your writing, Larisa…it comes from the place where poets are born…some magical, otherworldly dimension!

    1. How can I not mention this… I read the poem thrice for these lines –
“My thoughts are a startled murmuration
      of starlings
      with desperately flapping wings”
      My heart be still! ❀️

    2. I swear, you always know exactly what to say to make me feel like I’m going to cry and burst into a million little pieces from giddiness at the same time! That was so sweet of you, Isha!! I don’t know if there is anything I can ever say that will equal the gift that you continuously give me with your words.

        1. Yes! I have actually been doing really well, I am so happy to report! I had an amazing weekend and in general I’ve been working on being an overcomer in all things, so the only way to go is up. How about you?

                    1. Everywhere 🀩 But okay, I want to go to Budapest. I want to go somewhere where I can lose myself so deeply in the arms of history. Where’s I can practically taste all the events that occurred in the hundreds of generations before me. That is why I love Europe so much.

                    2. I did a lot when I was younger and living with my parents. Right now, I feel that I have been able to grow past that being the defining point for myself.
